Write a story, starting or finishing with the following sentence:
“Despite my best effort, he insisted on keeping a blind eye to the problem.”
Write between 250 – 300 words.
The problem with me and Sid, my husband, began as the epidemic caused by an unknown virus seemed to ease up. Ever since the outbreak, the town had carried a lockdown right until last week, when a few restaurants, hotels and travel agencies reopened. That was good news in a town where half of the residents are connected with tourism.
Owners of a B&B, Sid and I were really delighted to be able to do business after a long and desponding lockdown. We redecorated the gate and entrance of our house and placed advertisements online, hoping that soon the tourists, who had vanished for a while, would return soon.
I noticed worrying signs, though, from the food materials transported from the north border. Most of the seafoods in our town come from the country on our north, ranging from salmon to king crabs. For reasons I can’t tell, I just felt uneasy about the seafood unpacked from those container lorries. There, some of new cases found there were workers of fishing companies.
“No worries, dear” was Sid’s terse reply to my worries, always. He noted that scientists said the virus would not infect marine animals, so seafood is not a problem.
“I knew you’d say that. Anyway, I want to take seafood off from our menu.”
“Then we’ll lose half of our income. You know, most tourists come here only for our steamed lobsters and salmon fillets.”
Despite my best effort, he insisted on keeping a blind eye to the problem
